The hedgehogs have a soccer team,
I was surprised to hear,
A pretty useful one that won
The forest league last year

They squashed the squirrels sixteen-nil
Then beat the badgers, too
Outfoxed the foxes fourteen-four
The thrushes, thrashed, withdrew

They use a solid rubber ball
Found in the farmer’s ditch
Four saplings form the goalposts
And the pigeons mark the pitch

Their style is somewhat physical
They bump and bash and barge
Beware when they back into you
And fear their shoulder charge!

Today they face their toughest match
They’ve drawn the battle lines
There’ll be no pris’ners taken
When they play the porcupines!
