I’ve been discussing the question: “Do I want relief, or would I rather wallow?” with regard to depression.

And some of you may be thinking that depression is something you can just snap out of. If that’s you, then you’ve never been clinically depressed.

Others may be thinking that I don’t know or understand your situation, and if I did I would agree that you have a right to be depressed. No doubt, you do.

Depression is (somewhat simplistically) essentially a scrambling of the brain chemicals that regulate mood.

Grief is frequently accompanied by depression. The loss triggers brain chemical disruption. The hormone cocktail after pregnancy can also induce severe depression. These are called Reactive depressions and are “normal” and they are usually temporary and resolve themselves.

Another cause is prolonged periods spent with your body in fight or flight mode. Too much fear-induced adrenaline for too long can screw up the brain chemicals to a point where the body is incapable of fixing itself.

Fortunately, modern pharmaceutical science has created medicines that can rebalance them.
